After a couple of “commitment” sermons, I thought I’d write a bit about what it means to commit at Trinity.

Getting It Done

This is perhaps my favorite level of commitment to experience. I love seeing members and even guests pitch in to make sure the meal is prepared, or that the chairs are set up, or that the parking lot is cleared. Parents who show up to VBS to pick up their children and end up straightening a few things before they go. That’s Getting It Done.

Making It Happen

A step up from Getting It Done is the level of commitment that requires a little (or a lot of) pre-planning. Folks who make it happen on a regular basis are responsible for recruiting and sometimes training the volunteers who Get It Done. Ushers. Teachers. Greeters. Counters. The folks who Make It Happen are making lists and checking them twice. These folks are especially good to have around when plans need to come together at the last minute.

Figuring It Out

You may have realized now that these lists aren’t mutually exclusive. The folks who Get It Done and Make It Happen are sometimes the same folks as the people who Figure It Out. Committee Chairs and Team Leaders are trying to Figure It Out on a very regular basis. Figuring It Out usually means the process by which we come up with What We Do. bcomes from the passionate, creative leadership. I’m talking about those who see Trinity as it is in order to make what’s there even better. Figuring It Out is also about seeing what isn’t there, and asking, “Why not?”

I should add that there’s no point in Figuring It Out if God’s Vision isn’t the ultimate goal. In fact, God’s Vision is not only what we are Figuring Out, but also what we are endeavoring to Make Happen. God’s Vision is what we are trying to Get Done. God’s Vision is IT.

Covey said it best. Some of us are carrying boxes up the ladder: Getting It Done. Others are trying to get the right boxes up the ladder: Making It Happen. Leaders are trying to make sure the ladder is up against the right shelf: Figuring It Out.

Whatever your role, whoever you are, there’s a place for you in the scheme of things. Get It Done. Make It Happen. Figure It Out.
