In the days before the celebration of Easter, I’m reminded again that we are moving from celebration to celebration for most folks. From the “hosannah” of Palm Sunday to the “alleluia” of Easter, we’re finding few opportunities to bear the sorrows of the via dolorosa.
As I write this, I’m recovering from a nasty cold. For the past two days, I’ve been bedfast, waiting for the fever to break. Today, I’m much improved, but I’m still not 100%. Remembering the pains and suffering of the past couple of days, they seem like a bad dream, easily dismissed. But I know, in the midst of that trial, they were all too real.
This is the reason for Holy Week. We do not wallow in the pain, but we do recall it and honor the passion with which Christ defeated Sin.
It is the least we can do, especially in this Western society in which we are living, where suffering is often absent, at least in terms of Christ’s passion.
