Scripture: 2 Cor. 7-10

2 Corinthians 7:1
With promises like this to pull us on, dear friends, let’s make a clean break with everything that defiles or distracts us, both within and without. Let’s make our entire lives fit and holy temples for the worship of God.

Observations: Paul is encouraging “decision,” or the cutting away of those things which are not part of the life that God is asking us to choose. He’s talking to me, too.

Application: Like every other minister in the connection, there are dozens of opportunities to minister every hour of every day. Like every other disciple in the world, I’m faced with a choice of which opportunities to chase down. And like every human being in creation, I have all the distractions of entertainment, folly, waste, and sin surrounding me.

I have identified a focus and a mission. I know my purpose and my vision. With the promises of Christ, supported by his sacrifice and resurrection, I owe God my total devotion to the premise of accomplishing these goals. Instead, I fall victim to the smorgasbord of ministry and distraction.

I need to say, “No, I’m not able to give you my best effort right now,” much more often.

Prayer: God, please help me to discern those opportunities which are not for me. Help me develop a sense of Your timing. In Christ’s name, Amen.
