Scripture: Job 15; Acts 19-20
Acts19:11-12
God did powerful things through Paul, things quite out of the ordinary. The word got around and people started taking pieces of clothing—handkerchiefs and scarves and the like—that had touched Paul’s skin and then touching the sick with them. The touch did it—they were healed and whole.
Observations: First of all, this passage is the one that Don Stewart cites for his ministry of sending out green prayer cloths. In my opinion, its one of the biggest scams out there. But there it is, in black and white. My observations require me to ask, “Why aren’t pastors today able to accomplish these things?” Was Paul so different?
Application: Before I spend too much time detracting from Don Stewart and Peter Popoff and all the other televangelists making outrageous claims, I need to deal with Luke’s outrageous claim that Paul was healing people with bits of cloth that he had touched. And maybe I need to ask myself why I’m not able to do the same thing?
Prayer: God, I’m not clear on this particular passage, but I think that I see your instruction to stop worrying about the log in these two evangelist’ eyes while I’ve still got a speck or three in my own. If I’m missing something, would you please let me know what it is? Thanks. In Christ’s name I ask it, amen.
