Scripture: Matt. 8-10
Matthew 8:23-27
Then he got in the boat, his disciples with him. The next thing they knew, they were in a severe storm. Waves were crashing into the boat—and he was sound asleep! They roused him, pleading, “Master, save us! We’re going down!”Jesus reprimanded them. “Why are you such cowards, such faint-hearts?” Then he stood up and told the wind to be silent, the sea to quiet down: “Silence!” The sea became smooth as glass.
The men rubbed their eyes, astonished. “What’s going on here? Wind and sea come to heel at his command!”
Observations: Jesus is astonishing. He’s amazing. The sooner I get back to the wonder of being a disciple and the awe of being in God’s presence, the better.
Application: Somewhere in my life, I’ve somehow convinced myself that I shouldn’t be astonished by what Jesus does in my life. When I see a miraculous event or I witness the convergence of lives touched by the Holy Spirit, I have a tendency to say things like, “I should have expected that.”
There is nothing wrong with being amazed. There is nothing wrong with being astonished. As long as my willingness to be astonished doesn’t turn into doubt and cynicism, there’s plenty of room for me to look at God with fear and reverence and let out a holy, “Wow….”
Prayer: Remind me, God, that what you are doing isn’t always the ordinary. Amen.
