SCRIPTURE: Hos. 13-14; Ps. 100,102; Heb. 5
Hebrews 5:11-14 I have a lot more to say about this, but it is hard to get it across to you since you’ve picked up this bad habit of not listening. By this time you ought to be teachers yourselves, yet here I find you need someone to sit down with you and go over the basics on God again, starting from square one—baby’s milk, when you should have been on solid food long ago! Milk is for beginners, inexperienced in God’s ways; solid food is for the mature, who have some practice in telling right from wrong.
OBSERVATIONS: I used to think that Paul was scolding the church at Jerusalem. Could it be that he was simply recognizing that the disciples/believers at Jerusalem were stalled in their maturity? It seems to happen to a pretty large group of Christians at some time or another…
Moving on to maturity makes for fresh leaders for new disciples. That allows seasoned leaders to take greater responsibilities and to begin the work of raising up even more new leaders.
Herman Miller says that a leader is someone who develops other leaders. “The signs of outstanding leadership appear primarily among the followers. Are they reaching their potential? Are they learning?”
APPLICATION: My work is not to create followers of me, but followers of Christ who become leaders who lead others to the same life.
PRAYER: Good morning, God! Thanks for the day, and the opportunity to serve you in it. Please help me to see the opportunities to create and nurture those leaders around me. And help me to see those folks that I need to encounter who will make me a better leader. By Christ’s grace I pray, Amen.
