Ever wonder what would happen if your pastor were to fall off the face of the earth? God forbid, accidents befall even the nicest and most loved pastors. What happens then? Who would lead? Who would preach?

My goal as a pastor is to create structures that would survive for months before the loss registered.

The task of leadership is not to create followers. I don’t want anyone following me. I want folks to follow Jesus Christ. If I have people following me, then I’ve done something wrong.

Leaders form other leaders. So I should be seeing people around me who are developing skills that make them good leaders. They don’t have to lead like I do. Their styles should be emerging and developing naturally.

Let’s reframe this. I’ll speak directly to you. 🙂

Your leadership style is an outgrowth of your personality. Your area of leadership is directly related to the gifts God has given you and the areas of ministry into which God has drawn you.

As you offer leadership to others, are you creating opportunities for them to take authority? Are you equipping them with the necessary skills to pass along what you are teaching?

I hope I don’t get hit by a bus any time soon, but if it happens, I hope that I have been doing my job to the point that the leaders around me will step up and easily fill the gap while a new lead pastor is raised up among them.
