SCRIPTURE: Jer. 50-51; 3 John
3 John 1:5-8
Dear friend, when you extend hospitality to Christian brothers and sisters, even when they are strangers, you make the faith visible. They’ve made a full report back to the church here, a message about your love. It’s good work you’re doing, helping these travelers on their way, hospitality worthy of God himself! They set out under the banner of the Name, and get no help from unbelievers. So they deserve any support we can give them. In providing meals and a bed, we become their companions in spreading the Truth.
OBSERVATIONS: We are actually making this very idea a focus at Trinity UMC, so this has been on my mind for the past week. I love to find connections to ministry in my personal study and discipleship.
APPLICATION: We have to love people. No action that doesn’t pass that test can be part of what we do. Every guest must become beloved and served as such.
PRAYER: Help me, Lord, not to be a victim of a selfish kind of love. Teach me to give myself away and to offer you as the greatest gift possible. Open my heart, mind, and doors to receive those who are broken and searching. In Christ’s name, Amen.
