Trinity has been about core values for a long time now. During my time here, we’ve outlined and refined our values by focusing in on the mission, vision, and purpose for our community of Christ-followers.
One of the things to which we have pledged unwavering faith is a commitment to the safety, well-being, and christian education of our children. Our Safe Sanctuaries policy is extensive, and routinely retrained within our staff and volunteers.
We also hold our staff to a very high standard of accountable responsibility. Parents and supervisors regularly check in on the nursery and toddler rooms.
During a recent check-in, one of our staffers was seen using a cell phone. In many churches, that would be glossed over if it were even noticed at all.
At Trinity, using a cell phone while you are on the clock caring for children results in immediate termination of employment.
Wait, did you say immediate termination of employment?
Yes. Yes, I did.
How can you enforce such a draconian policy?
First, its not draconian if your team agrees to it. In fact, the idea was theirs to begin with. In a process that began with teammates helping teammates, the policy was agreed to by the entire nursery staff. While I’m saddened that the staff member chose poorly, I’m convinced that the results of those actions were expected, and no surprise when the notice of termination of employment was given.
The reason I’m sharing this with you is so that you can see the potential within your team. If you have a clear vision for the future, but your team is faltering, the problem may be that you aren’t challenging them. Ask them if they’d like to be held to a higher standard. And when they agree, do just that.
The only thing worse than a leader who won’t offer a higher standard is a leader that won’t enforce the standard to which everyone has agreed.
Put faith in your team. Ask them how they can step things up, and give them permission to excel!
