SCRIPTURE: Jeremiah 1-2; John 10

John 10:11-13
“I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd puts the sheep before himself, sacrifices himself if necessary. A hired man is not a real shepherd. The sheep mean nothing to him. He sees a wolf come and runs for it, leaving the sheep to be ravaged and scattered by the wolf. He’s only in it for the money. The sheep don’t matter to him.”

OBSERVATIONS: Jesus is our example of sacrificing ourselves for those around us, for those for whom we are responsible.

APPLICATION: Joey, this is a reminder that you are not to run just because of the wolf — and not to make it about the wolf, either. A protracted fight with the wolf while your sheep starve for lack of green pastures is not in the job description of the shepherd. If the sheep matter, and you know they do, put the sheep before yourself. Don’t be the hired man.

PRAYER: God, send me strength to stand, courage to stand down, and the wisdom to know when to do each.
