SCRIPTURE: 1 Samuel 25-26; Psalm 63; Matthew 9

David took the spear and water jug that were right beside Saul’s head, and they slipped away. Not a soul saw. Not a soul knew. No one woke up! They all slept through the whole thing. A blanket of deep sleep from God had fallen on them.

1 Samuel 26:12

Jesus knew what they were thinking, and said, “Why this gossipy whispering? Which do you think is simpler: to say, ‘I forgive your sins,’ or, ‘Get up and walk’? Well, just so it’s clear that I’m the Son of Man and authorized to do either, or both. . . .” At this he turned to the paraplegic and said, “Get up. Take your bed and go home.” And the man did it. The crowd was awestruck, amazed and pleased that God had authorized Jesus to work among them this way.

Matthew 9:4-8

OBSERVATIONS: Dead asleep and unaware, or too busy talking about how impossible or blasphemous the work is — either way, paralyzed and impotent. Whether it’s me or the entire Church or some group in between, the work isn’t getting done.

APPLICATION: Joey! Wake up! And quit your whining! Get it done.

PRAYER: God, awaken us to the glory of resurrection. Silence our wagging tongues. Urge us to the work that is even now at hand. We ask for the sake of the Christ. Amen.
