SCRIPTURE: 1 Samuel 24; Psalm 57, 58; 1 Chronicles 8; Matthew 8

Another follower said, “Master, excuse me for a couple of days, please. I have my father’s funeral to take care of.”
Jesus refused. “First things first. Your business is life, not death. Follow me. Pursue life.”

Matthew 8:21-22

OBSERVATIONS: The follower wanted to follow Jesus, but not yet. More than the funeral, the man was likely asking to go care for his father in his dying days. Jesus makes it clear that there were others who could fulfill that obligation, but no one but this procrastinating disciple could fulfill the calling that Jesus had placed on his life.

APPLICATION: Joey, focus upon those tasks that only you are called to. Share the tasks that others are able to perform. And leave off entirely the tasks that everyone can do, choosing instead to raise up leaders and disciples to manage those activities.

PRAYER: God, remind me of my calling. Teach me to make disciples who make disciples. And let that which I have been set apart to do be my first priority. I ask it for Christ’s sake. Amen.
